I just looked at this blog and saw that I wrote briefly after last year's ride (June 20, 2007) but not since. Here it is April Fools Day, 2008, and I am just now getting focused on the Ride (The experience was very moving and created lasting memories, hence, Bold Capitalization!)
The intensity and complexity of life in June 2007 (read the last couple of entries below!) are long past. We sold our studio, moved out, bought the house next door, turned it into studio and office, and are now, 2 months after completing the work inside, still moving. For those who know Linda and I, there is a lot to move. I spent most of February and March trying to shake a persistent illness. Finally, after my doctor said, "there is no virtue in not taking antibiotics when you've been sick for more than two weeks," I filled a scrip and began to get better. The tinitus lingers ....
I just looked at my total mileage from March of last year and saw that riding a little over 100 miles a week, I am on target to be ready for the ride on June 1. However, total miles and hours on the bike are way down from last year's training. That is a red flag for how I increase my training regimen over the next 6 weeks.
Today marks the beginning of my fund raising. A little late, but not much. Last year I started on my 62nd birthday. This year I was under the weather and less comfortable acknowledging how many years lie behind me, so that marker was passed without action. The decision to get Social Security early contributed to my reluctance of focusing on the b-day.
But the reality is I'm 63 years old. And healthy, fit, and excited to be preparing for this effort again. I look forward to hearing from anyone who reads this. One of the comments I received last year was how my posting here provided some a sense that they too were preparing for the ride.
So, if it feels good, do it. My ALC/7 site is where you can make a donation or see an occasional image from training rides. There is a large collection of images and writings from all of last year's ride here. It does provide a sense of the wild, caring, enthusiastic wave that rolled through California for a week!
And Make a Difference where and how you can. This feels like a year of real possibilities...
